Contxto – Today venture capital (VC) firm, Latin Leap announced an investment in Colombian media platform, Mowies for an undisclosed amount. Other participating investors included Contento BPS, Grupo Trébol Comunicaciones, and Dariem S.A.S.

The startup will use the funds to expand its on-demand indie film and documentaries platform throughout Latin America.

Mowies captures the trend towards authentic and diverse content for on-demand consumption by remote audiences,” observed Stefan Krautwald. General Partner of Latin Leap in a press release. “We are proud to be able to support the company’s growth trajectory throughout Latin America.”

The timing is quite right, with social-isolation, nobody can head to a theatre and catch a flick. So now, the movies are coming to viewers.

Mowies and movies you won’t find elsewhere

Mowies is an interesting take as it offers filmmakers and media creatives a place where they can freely exhibit their work. Online, users will find movies, series, and documentaries. The creators fix a price for renting or buying their work. They then take a 90 percent cut when someone views their masterpiece.

Spectators can also set up what Mowies calls “VideoShops.” Through them, they help distribute content to reach audiences elsewhere. Thanks to their networking help, they take a 20 percent cut for each sale on their VideoShop. Meanwhile the author of the piece earns 70 percent.

Alejandro Arango founded Mowies less than two years ago and is certain the investment will give more visibility to content creators.

“We believe it is a question of vision and mentality,” said Arango in a statement. “Previously the horizon painted very differently for content creators. Now Mowies appears serving as an open bridge that connects with the world.”

Showbiz and the overall creative industry can be tough, and Mowies’ solution offers them a place where they strut their stuff.

“It is titanic but necessary: artists do not survive from applause alone. With the support from Latin Leap we will be able to accelerate our plan,” he concluded.
